Easy Language Ideas

*Remember: The best play is child-led, both individually and in social settings.  The following activity ideas are intended to bring awareness of the skills children develop through play, not to replace free-play or meaningful, genuine adult-child interactions*

Children learn language through experience.  They need real conversation with adults in order to understand both the verbal parts (actual words) of language and, even more importantly, the body language and tone involved with communication.

The very best language-building activity you can do with your children is READ!  Every day, as much as possible, read to them, ask them questions about the story, such as, "What will happen next?", "Who was your favorite character?", "How did that part make you feel?", "If you could change the ending, what would you change?"....and so on.

Even if you don't have time to read multiple times a day, be sure your children have access to books.  If you can't buy them, make a weekly trip to the library to keep selections new and interesting!

No, you don't need a fancy alphabet puzzle to incorporate language into your day.  You can label common objects in your home with paper, pen, and tape.

Get yourself a Sharpie and label just about anything with letters; rocks are free!

But, again, most importantly........READ!!!!
